German Ministry of Economics and Technology project for the dismantlement of nuclear powered submarines

German Ministry of Economics and Technology dismantlement and radioactive waste disposal project in the Murmansk region: showpiece project for the G8 Global Partnership and a key catalyst for German-Russian strategic cooperation

Introduction

At the Kananaskis summit in June 2002, the G8 states launched a new G8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Nuclear Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, which aims to prevent terrorist access to, and the spread of, nuclear weapons and materials of mass destruction, and under which the G8 states will undertake cooperative projects on the basis of agreed guidelines. At the summit, the G8 states committed to raise up to US$ 20 billion to support such projects over the next ten years. One of Russia's top priorities as a member of the Global G8 Partnership is to destroy the country's stockpiles of chemical weapons and to dismantle the Russian navy's nuclear powered submarines in an environmentally safe manner. The guidelines adopted at the Kananaskis summit laid the groundwork for negotiations regarding concrete agreements on further projects. Germany has committed US$ 1.5 billion to Global G8 Partnership projects.
